Purpose:
A pharmaceutical company is seeking a Deputy Plant Manager who will be responsible for overseeing the synchronisation of all the elements of a modern Infant Nutritionals manufacturing plant ensuring that the factory volume targets are achieved without compromising quality, the incumbent will lead and coordinate a team of food manufacturing and packaging experts responsible for various departments; ensuring that manufacturing and packaging operations can safeguard product compliance with stringent food safety requirements, quality specifications, production schedules, standard operating procedures, good manufacturing practices, company policies and procedures in a highly regulated industry
Key Job Outputs:
- Oversee the operational area, ensuring employee safety, quality and environmental standards are met
- Assist the team in the development and execution of savings plans and action plans
- Anticipate future needs in line with management control strategies
- Allocate resources effectively and utilise assets with the goal of increasing throughput, while still maintaining stringent quality standards
- Measure and conduct efficiency analysis and coordinate to resolve any engineering or equipment failures and make the necessary improvements where needed
- Engage with the engineering department to synchronise continuous improvement projects
- Ensure that the team conducts credible root cause analysis and problem-solving sessions with cross functional teams
- Implement action plans for continuous improvement initiatives to reduce costs, waste, labour (FTE) in order to maintain and improve efficiency
- Lead by holding self and others accountable to HACCP food safety guidelines, GMP, and other International Standards
- Coach, mentor and hold Section Heads, Supervisors and Coordinators accountable for the achievement of performance standards, safety, quality, and volume in operations
- Conduct employee performance appraisals to identify areas of development
- Identify talent and actively implement succession strategies to develop and nurture capacity
- Delegate and assign work tasks to production staff to achieve set manufacturing targets
- Optimise production processes by eliminating waste and other constraints to improve work efficiency
- Prepare and submit daily/weekly/monthly production reports to monitor the volume output
- Implement shutdown plans and conduct the pre-start up inspections on respective equipment
- Manage production schedules to meet customer demands
- Coordinate maintenance and repair of plant equipment
- Develop and manage the plant budget
- Analyse production data to identify areas for improvement
- Collaborating with other departments such as procurement, distribution, and marketing
- Ensure efficient inventory management
- Respond to and resolve production matters in a timely manner
- Communicate effectively with senior management and stakeholders
Core Competencies:
- Understanding the fundamentals of managing a multiple facet factory
- In depth knowledge and understanding of dairy processing, spray drying, powder blending, powder packing, UHT processing and aseptic packing
- Food Safety and Quality Culture (FSSC 22000 V6)
- Fundamentals of food processing, engineering, maintenance, dairy chemistry, microbiology and biochemistry
- Labour Relations knowledge
- Experience with Constraints Management, Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies
- Proficiency in ERP software and other relevant technology
- Experience in budget management
- Knowledge of sustainable and environmentally friendly practices
- Eight plus years’ experience in food processing or manufacturing
- Ability to analyse and interpret production data
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Good problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Proficiency in ERP software and other relevant technology
- Experience in budget management

Qualifications:
- BSc Food Science (Dairy Technology) or BEng Industrial Engineering or Dairy/Food Science and Technology qualification
- Post graduate Management qualification will be an advantage
Experience:
- Minimum eight years’ experience in managing all aspects of production in a Dairy foods/FMCG facility
- Previous experience / knowledge and understanding of Infant food production, Dairy, and/or FMCG food production processes will be an advantage
- Advanced computer skills (Excel) are a must
